Tuffs are relatively light in weight. They can be worked very easily, sawn or carved into all kinds of shapes.
Tuff stone has been quarried and used extensively in northeastern Oregon, including the John Day Valley, Wallowa, Baker, and other communities.
The photographs on this page highlight the historic stonework of Baker City, Oregon , the original location of the Ideal Quarry. Baker City has many historic buildings built with local tuff stone dating from the early 1900's, both private homes and distinctive public buildings. The town has more than 100 buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places .
